Wetpaint Update -September 2006 v2

<td class="wp-border-all"

We realize this is the second "monthly" newsletter you've received from Wetpaint this month, but today we rolled out several important changes to the network -- all for the better! -- so we thought you'd want to know about them as soon as possible. As always, these enhancements are a direct result of your suggestions, so thanks for helping us make Wetpaint such a colorful place to be online.

The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.
Newest Features Inspired by Wetpaint Users

Prettier Pages
We've done a bit of reorganizing to streamline the general look of Wetpaint sites. You'll notice the following refinements:

We removed the tabs at the top of the page. You will now find Page History and Comments at the bottom of your main content area.

The Keyword Tags and Latest Update information has been moved to the bottom of the content area as well. This shift helps pull all your content higher up on the page.

The new site activity module on your site's homepage dynamically updates to reflect most active pages, recent comments, and active contributors.

The Google ads have been moved to the left side of the page to create more room for your text, pictures, and videos -- and to make space for new features debuting soon. (Stay tuned!)

To see these changes in action, check out HTCwiki, wikiFido, or your own Wetpaint site.

Safari Support
Mac-lovers rejoice -- you can now use the Safari browser to create or edit a Wetpaint site. While some of the features available to Firefox or IE users do not work as robustly with Safari, we plan to keep expanding Safari support as Apple and the Safari team make further improvements to the browser.

Add Google Video to Your Site
Along with videos from YouTube, you can now easily integrate Google videos into your Wetpaint site. Just click the Video icon on the EasyEdit toolbar, paste in the Google video URL, and you're done. Here's one of our favorites from Google video.

See Your Sites and New Activity at Wetpaint.com
Now you can keep tabs on the latest site updates and comments from all the different Wetpaint sites out there by checking what's fresh at www.wetpaint.com. And more importantly, you can sign in to view in a single location a list of all the Wetpaint sites you've signed into or created.

That's all for now! See you next month, and thanks again for giving Wetpaint a whirl!

The Wetpaint Crew

Puppies

essentials

My list of marathon essentials –

Watch or ipod with speed and distance (e.g. Suunto T6 with footpod or the new Apple gizmo macthingy)

Nike’s compression under shirts – nipple savers – and they make you look pretty good!

Running program I used and really liked - http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_4/130.shtml (recommend the Intermediate, try to get as close to 26 miles before the race)

Course maps via the slowrunning.wetpaint.com link from Kevin - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/

Good friends to encourage, motivate, and share the pain

A very supportive spouse – it’s tough to schedule runs, work, kids, home, chores, etc...

Craig

Pre-Training
I ran yesterday. 1/2 hour. Sort of like a 12 step program, but different.
Mileage = 15 miles
Long run = 6 (why?)
Cheating = Couldn't do the long run Saturday so I did it Sunday and skipped cross-training.
Weight = Started at 176, ended at 178. What's up with that? (May have been the salami bread, sausage roll, and baked ziti from Cole and Anna's baptism on Sunday - just a hunch.)
Injuries = Does not being able to touch your toes count?
Route = Around and around Gamecock Lane. May cross-train tomorrow if I get out of work early and make it to the pool.
Weight = Back to 176. Is this progress? Skipped it to watch American Idol

I can't believe these three are in the finals

 Chris was way better

Wednesday May 17

 Ran 5 miles

Late PM run in warm weather

Best run to date...I actually ran most of the way

Home in time to watch the results show for American Idol

Sunday May 21

 Ran 5 miles

 Early evening with rain showers

 Pretty good run

My shoes are shot...I think I popped the air things in my Nike Airs

Wednesday May 25

 Ran 5 miles...again

Early evening with showers and breezy

Preety good run...most of the way up the big frigging hill

Left knee is starting to bug me...gotta get some new shoes

Home in time for the American Idol results show

Can't believe Taylor won...not that Katherine was any better

Sunday May 28

 Ran 8 miles

 Mid-morning in pouring rain

 Good run

Longest distance I have ever run

Big blister on my right foot. Right ankle is a bit sore.

Saturady June 3

Ran 5 miles after not running since the last long run

Totally sucked...as if I lost everything from the pervious work

 Really depressed about it

Got new shoes...should have been like Rob and gone to a running store where they could tell me to wear slippers or something like that

Sunday June 4

Ran 3 miles in the afternoon after a walk with the family

Totally sucked once again. I'm now pretty certain I have regressed to pre-running form. What happened!?!

Tuesday June 6

Ran 4 miles in the late evening

Good run...day off seems to have helped

Next two weeks are going to suck from a training perspective...work is going to be crazy

Sunday June 11

Ran 4 miles in the evening

Don't really remember it...forgot to enter it in the log

Saturday June 17

Ran 4 miles in the evening

Havne't been running much of late...launching the company tomorrow

Hope to be back and at them sometime in the coming week

 I better get cracking

Thursday June 22

Ran 5 miles in the evening

Pretty good run considering my lack of training of late

Made it all the way up the big fat hill without stopping...first time ever!

Saturday June 24

Ran 5 miles in the evening

 Another good run

Again made it up the hill without stopping

It was really hot...I hate running in the heat

Tuesday June 25

Ran 5 miles in the evening

An okay run...didn't make it all the way up the hill

Thursday June 29

Ran 3 miles in the evening

 Good run with good pace

Sunday July 2

Ran 8 miles in the evening

 Great run...it was hot out

Made it pretty much the entire way except up the big f*cking hill

Wednesday July 5

 Ran 3.5 miles

Thursday July 6

 Ran 3.5 miles

Sunday July 10

 Ran 11 miles

New record for longest personal run!!!

I've been pretty bad lately at keeping the log here. I've been following the running schedule that they sent us for registering for the marathon. Last week was a wash (too much work, not enough time). Been better this week. Today is 90+ degrees in Seattle. Did a 5 mile run this AM. Sweat a ton. Back to a more reasonable schedule this week.

And back again...

Wednesday August 30

Ran 8 miles

Amazing run...I think I hit 8 minute miles

Weight down to 172 lbs - I'm pretty excited

Kevin's Itinerary

Arrive Friday October XX via Southwest Airlines (lord help me) at TBD
Depart Monday October 23 via Southwest Airlines at TBD

training history

May 25

Ran 2 miles uphill both ways (without walking).

For a bony-assed 35 year old, I run with the speed of a turtle and the grace of a longhorn (no offense to U of Texas fans).

 I still hate running

May 26

 Ran 3 miles

Not a bad run. Got into a groove by humming my favorite David Hasselhoff song.

Encouraged to try 4 miles tomorrow night

I still hate running but a little less than last night

May 30

No running over weekend. Too much family stuff got in the way (but this was a good thing).

Was planning long run on Saturday but pregnant wife started cleaning like crazy. Uh-oh! We may be nesting a couple weeks early!

May 31

Ran 2 miles last night like a cold knife through rock hard butter.

I've been working on running with tempo. Pro is that running is much easier. Con is that my left hand kinda' flails out so I kinda' run like a girl. So I have to now determine if I sacrifice style for endurance or wear a mini-skirt and add a skip to every 3rd stride.

June 1

Bought new shoes yesterday... Mizuno Wave Riders or something like that. Went to an actual running store and asked for help. For me this was a huge step because I'm the guy who would drive around Death Valley for 3 years and not ask for directions. The guy took all sorts of measurements and watched me run and everything. So $90 poorer, I threw my $50 New Balance crappy shoes in the trash.

Ran 3 miles last night like it was nothing. In the immortal words of Spike Lee (in the old MJ Nike commercials) "Money... It must be the shoes."

June 3

Ran two miles a couple days ago in pouring rain. Yes, it does rain sometimes in Texas. Very good run.

Ran/walked 8 miles today in 98 degree heat. About passed out at 4 mile mark going up huge hill. Got to top of hill and walked a bit over a mile and then ran the rest of the way. Not a good sign. When I do the 20 mile run before the marathon, I'll have to climb this hill 4 times. Oh crap! I think I have a huge psychological barrier to get over.

This makes me hate running even more.

June 21

Ran twice last week - four miles each.

A/C went out on Sunday so I've been scrambling to get someone to my house to fix it. Bought a window unit and installed it last night instead of running. Better to keep the family cool and happy rather than run a few miles. I'll try to get a 5 miler in tonight.

I still hate running and am not looking forward to the 8 mile run on Saturday particularly since it's still 90 degrees at 9 pm. Did I mention before that Texas is stupid hot?

June 24

Ran 9 miles today at 11 minutes/mile. It was overcast skies and 80 degrees but crazy humid from the hard rains last night.

Hit a wall around the four mile mark but pushed through it. Found a good rhythm at the five mile mark and rode it to the finish.

Very encouraged by the run. I felt as though I could have kept going and going.

Even though I completed my longest run ever with relative ease, I still dislike running. I get really bored! Any hints or suggestions would be appreciated.

June 28

 Ran 4 miles in 9 min 30 sec/mile. I was smokin'!

Not sore this morning for first time after a run. Think I turned a corner. Will give 5 miles a shot tonight but don't know how I'll do -- only got two hours of sleep last night. I forget how little sleep you get with a new born baby.

July 2

Ran 4 miles last Thursday at 8 min/mile. Was totally exhausted at end. Don't think this helped too much. Am I supposed to be running at my marathon pace?

Ran 10 miles yesterday at 11 min/mile. 90 degree heat and crazy humid due to morning rain showers. I think I could have ran a few more miles. I'm a bit sore this morning and moving pretty slow. But I was this way before I started running. Children have a tendancy to do this to you...

July 11

Ran 4-5-4 milers last week between 8 - 9 min/mile. I've determined to try to push the weekday pace to build up cardio and do marathon pace over long weekend runs. This sounds logical but hope it doesn't do any damage or lead to burn-out.

Skipped long run last weekend because family needed me. We still haven't found our groove with our 2 year old and now one month old. It will probably take a couple more months until we figure out how to function as a family.

Ran a 4 miler last night with no problems. Planning on running at least 13 miles this weekend.

Side note: I'm actually looking forward to my long run... Not because I like running all of a sudden. I still think running sucks! I just like the idea of seeing how far I can push myself. I must say that I'm impressed with myself in that two months ago, I was wicked-out-of-shape and couldn't run a mile and a couple weeks ago, I cranked out a 10 miler and can run 5 miles today without getting winded. I'm actually thinking about buying a BOB running stroller and making a habit out of this. Maybe if I have my kids along, I may actually like running. So much for my aspirations of reaching middle age with a beer gut...

July 31

It's been a while since my last entry. I've been deviating from the running schedule a bit. I've been running 4-5-4 on Tuesdays, Wed, Thurs and ran 8 miles a couple Saturday's ago. My weekday runs are usually 8 - 9 min/mile depending on what I eat for dinner. My weekend runs are around 10 minutes/mile. So I'm planning on running the marathon in Chicago at a 10 min/mile pace. I don't know if I can go faster than that over such a long distance even though I'm training on some pretty hilly terrain.

I ran 15 miles at a 10 min/mile pace last Saturday and feel great about it. But I had nothing left in the tank after the run and am still crazy sore. So I have this great feeling of accomplishment because that was a hell of a long run. But I also have a feeling of dred knowing that there are 11 miles more to run to complete a marathon. Oh shit! I'll just make sure that I run the marathon with a couple bucks in my shoe for an El ride back to Wally's house from the midway point in the marathon.

Aug. 14:

Ran 8 miles two weekends ago.

Ran 16 miles last Saturday morning and felt pretty good at the end. I think I could have made it to 20 miles if I wanted to. Kept up a 10 min/mile pace. My knees hurt like crazy when I finished. I think it's because I was braking (or slowing up) going down the steep hills rather than riding the hill down at a quicker pace. I'll try to change this next weekend and see what happens. I'm a bit scared of exhausting myself early on in the run so I think I was slowing myself down. I guess this hurts (literally) more than it helps.

On Friday night/Saturday morning, noone in my house was sleeping. Blaise got up around 1 am. Grant woke up about every hour. So at 4 am, I was wide awake and everyone was asleep so I took off running. Almost 3 hours later, I walk in from my run as everyone is waking up. Worked out pretty well minus the lack of sleep. But it was funny seeing Blaise's reaction as I walked through the door. Normally when he sees me, he runs to me and gives me a huge hug. Well, when I walked in after running and was a huge, sweaty, stinky blob, he started running, stopped and kinda' gave me one of those RCA dog looks like... OK I know you're my dad and I really love you but man you look gross and I'm not comming within 5 feet of you. Fair enough. But I change his poopy diapers. The least he can do is give me a hug when I'm a sweat ball. I think it's an even trade.

Aug. 28:

Intended to run 17 or 18 miles on Saturday. Got through 13 miles and had a painful hip pointer. Hurt like hell so I stopped running. This is my first set-back in training so I'm getting nervous about my condition on the day of the marathon. What if I experience the same pain? How can I prevent this from happening again? Is this within my control? My knees have been really aching up to now too. I hope they don't get any worse. I'm going back to the running store and getting a new pair of shoes and hope this helps. Maybe the shoes that I bought a couple months ago have already worn down. At this point I'll sacrifice a chicken if it will help me run better.

Random Thoughts by Pete

Londons & Sons is calling!!! I have scheduled a lunch meeting for L&S next Wednesday - can't wait to report on how that helps with the diet!

May 30th - This weekend I learned the difference between what I can do and what I should do. Part of the yard needed re-sodding. Rather than paying to have it done - I thought "Hey I can do this no problem" I palate (60 yards) of sod and 2 yards of top soil later I realize that it is ok to pay someone to do something for you. (Just not run the marathon.)

To all the single parents out there - you guys rock! I don't know how you do it. I have been a single parent for 1 1/2 days and I am flustered. This weekend will be a bit of a breeak as I will not have the office hanging over my head - just all the house stuff, kid stuff, and taking care of a wife recovery from surgery. Again, I don't know how you do it, but well done.

Training Log

Training came to a crashing stop this week as the entire Sanfelippo clan came down with strep throat! I did manage, however, to lose 5 pounds in the process. Hoping to run this weekend.

With 23 weeks to go to Chicago and 18 until the training marathon I am running in St. Louis, I am finding the attached schedule to be a good one.
http://www.fleetfeetstl.com/LC/marathontraining.pdf

Thursday May 25 - Just over 21 weeks to Chicago. Reset training by making the Lewis & Clark Marathon Sept 17th (in St. Louis) a half. Will tack on 6/7 miles to the back of it - allowing me a 20 mile run 5 weeks ahead of Chicago.

June 8 - Training is back and on a roll! Monday cross-trained on the elliptical and played softball Tuesday night. Ran a quick 3.5 last night and rebounded with 4 miles this morning. I have successfully tweaked the diet over the past 2 weeks and weight is starting to drop.

June 21 - continuing to follow program I posted from Fleet Feet. Ran 4 this morning at a "soft pace" of 11 minute miles. Finding the softer pace during my week day runs more enjoyable and it doesn't seem to impact long runs dramatically. Will be running in Detroit and Tyler, TX next week.

June 23 - 4.5 miles completed this am - kept the "weekday" pace of 11 mm. Golf lesson Saturday, 7 mile run on Sunday.

June 24 - cross trained with a golf lesson. Good news - my pro didn't tell me to give up the game. Bad news - I am still not hitting my drive 290 - maybe after the next lesson.

June 25 - scratched the run - plantar fascitis flaming up again.

June 26 - ran 2 miles before the fascitis reared it's head. Did some weights and cooled down with some stretching. Owe 4 miles tomorrow before heading to Detroit.

July 16 - 14 weeks from today is the run! Training is coming along, but I am getting nervous - don't want to be the weakest in the chain! Had my last drink (a Beck's) until after the marathon. I am also modifying the diet a little bit. I may not be the friendliest guy over the next 14 weeks, but I know it is the right thing to do. I know I won't get to Wally's time (9 minute miles are a pipe dream for me), but I want to be below 9:30.

July 27 - The wek so far has been a bust! Got Patty home from the hospital today and haven't been able to run as I have become dad, mom, and nurse. (Bad time to give up the vino!) Need to get a run in sooner than later - hope to push out 13 this Sunday am.
